Professional Learning for GT Hours
Accountability Measures from the Texas State Plan for the Education of Gifted & Talented Students
- 5.1 A minimum of thirty (30) clock hours of professional learning that includes nature and needs of gifted/talented students, identification and assessment of gifted/ talented students, and curriculum and instruction for gifted/talented students is required for teachers who provide instruction and services that are a part of the district’s defined gifted/talented services. Teachers are required to have completed the thirty (30) hours of professional learning prior to their assignment to the district’s gifted/talented services (19 TAC §89.2(1)).
- 5.2 Teachers without required training who are assigned to provide instruction and services that are part of the district’s defined gifted/ talented services are required to complete the thirty (30) hour training within one semester (19 TAC §89.2(2)).
- 5.6 Teachers who provide instruction and services that are a part of the district’s defined gifted/ talented services receive a minimum of six (6) hours annually of professional development in gifted/talented education that is related to state teacher gifted/talented education standards (19 TAC §89.2(3) and TAC §233.1).
PHASE ONE: INITIAL 30 HOURS OF GT TRAINING:
IF YOU ARE ASSIGNED TO ANY OF THE TEACHING POSITIONS LISTED BELOW YOU ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE 30 HOURS OF INITIAL GT TRAINING WITHIN THE FIRST SEMESTER OF YOUR TEACHING ASSIGNMENT:
- KINDERGARTEN TEACHER
- 1-5 GRADE TEACHER ASSIGNED TO TEACH ANY IDENTIFIED GT STUDENT IN CORE CONTENT (RLA, MATH, SCIENCE, SOCIAL STUDIES)
- SECONDARY TEACHER ASSIGNED TO TEACH AN ADVANCED LEVEL COURSE (COURSE DESIGNATED AS HONORS, HONORS +, AP, or DUAL CREDIT)
THE 30 HOURS IS BROKEN INTO THE FOLLOWING SPECIFIC STRANDS:
- 6 Hours of Nature & Needs
- 6 Hours of Identification & Assessment
- 6 Hours of Differentiated Curriculum
- 6 Hours of Creativity & Instructional Strategies
- 6 Hours of Depth & Complexity
YOU CAN COMPLETE AS MANY OF THESE COURSES AS YOU NEED BY ENROLLING IN THE 2023-2024 GT CANVAS COURSE
IF YOU'VE COMPLETED THE 30 HOURS OF INITIAL GT TRAINING OUTSIDE OF BIRDVILLE ISD (ie another district, regional service center, etc...) YOU NEED TO UPLOAD YOUR DOCUMENTATION AND REQUEST THE CREDIT BE ADDED TO YOUR BISD TRANSCRIPT IN STRIVE Access information to upload documentation to Strive
PHASE 2: ANNUAL 6-HOUR GT UPDATE
IF YOU ARE ASSIGNED TO ANY OF THE TEACHING POSITIONS LISTED BELOW YOU ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE AN ANNUAL 6-HOUR GT UPDATE BEGINNING THE SCHOOL YEAR AFTER YOU COMPLETE THE INITIAL 30 HOURS OF GT TRAINING:
- KINDERGARTEN TEACHER
- 1-5 GRADE TEACHER ASSIGNED TO TEACH ANY IDENTIFIED GT STUDENT IN CORE CONTENT (RLA, MATH, SCIENCE, SOCIAL STUDIES)
- SECONDARY TEACHER ASSIGNED TO TEACH AN ADVANCED LEVEL COURSE (COURSE DESIGNATED AS HONORS, HONORS +, AP, or DUAL CREDIT)
YOU CAN COMPLETE AN ASYNCHRONOUS OPTION BY ENROLLING IN THE 2023-2024 GT CANVAS COURSE
OTHER OPTIONS FOR EARNING YOUR UPDATE HOURS MAY INCLUDE COURSES FROM A REGIONAL SERVICE CENTER, ATTENDANCE AT APSI or OTHER ADVANCED TRAINING. IF THE TRAINING WAS COMPLETED OUTSIDE OF BIRDVILLE ISD, YOU NEED TO UPLOAD YOUR DOCUMENTATION AND REQUEST THE CREDIT BE ADDED TO YOUR BISD TRANSCRIPT IN STRIVE Access information to upload documentation to Strive
