Tax Rate Information
Even though Birdville ISD did not raise the tax rate in 2017, because of increases in property values, BISD’s tax rate will raise more money for operations and debt payment than last year.
Property values are determined by the Tarrant Appraisal District. (BISD has no input into home or business valuations.) When BISD receives additional revenue from local property taxes, the state reduces the amount of funding they provide the District to educate students. Therefore, the state benefits from increased valuations, not the District. In addition, because of how the state structures funding for schools, if BISD decreased their tax rate to offset the increase in valuation, the state would still decrease the funding they provide the District.
For the 2017 tax year, Birdville ISD’s Board of Trustees adopted a Maintenance & Operations tax rate of $1.04 and a Debt Service tax rate of $0.4139, which is a total tax rate of $1.4539. ($1.4539 is the same tax rate as 2016.) BISD’s maintenance and operations tax rate of $1.04 has remained the same since 2007.
Due to lower interest rates, increases in valuation and prudent financial decisions by the District, the debt service tax rate is 1.35 cents less than what was told to voters in 2014. In addition, since 2014, the Board has approved prepayment of $10.77 million of bond principal saving taxpayers more than $8.7 million in interest payments.
