GT Identification Referrals for the GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) Program

September 2017

Dear Parent or Guardian,

BISD is currently accepting referrals for the GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) Program for grades 6-12.  The initial screening process will involve the use of:

  • Abilities test scores
  • Achievement test scores
  • Creative Thinking test scores
  • Input from parents and classroom teachers
  • Additional data may be collected on your child as well.

At the end of the initial screening process, the GATE Placement Committee will meet to determine if your child meets the criteria for GATE services.  You will be notified by letter regarding the placement decision of your child.   **If your child already participates in the Gifted and Talented program (formerly known as Advanced Academics), he/she does NOT need to be referred.

While many children are bright and high-achieving students, not all would be considered gifted learners.  You may use the following link for resources that highlight traits of both gifted learners and high-achieving students to help determine if this program might be a good fit for your child .  In addition, please note that secondary GATE students receive services through enrollment in pre-AP, Advanced Placement, and Dual Credit courses.  If you would like more information on the design of the curriculum for these courses or information on the benefits of enrolling in these courses, please contact your campus counselor.  If you would like more information about identification for the GATE program, please make plans to attend a brief meeting on Tuesday, September 18th at 6:00 pm at the Fine Arts and Athletic Complex   9200 Mid Cities Blvd, North Richland Hills, Texas.

If you are interested in referring your child for this program, please complete the GATE Parent Questionnaire and return to the Academic Coach on your child’s campus by Thursday, October 13th.   The GATE Parent Questionnaire is available at or in the campus office.  Only students who have a completed GATE Parent Questionnaire will be screened for GATE services. The testing window for students in grades 6-12 with a completed GATE Parent Questionnaire will take place during a window from October 23-November 10, 2017.  Please let me know if you have any questions.
