A love of numbers and a talent for problem-solving have earned one Stowe Elementary student national recognition.

Eleazar Young has been named a 2026 National Math Star, joining an exclusive group of students from across the country selected for their exceptional ability and potential in mathematics.

Eleazar is one of 618 second- and third-grade students selected for the 2026 cohort from nearly 9,000 applicants across 10 states. National Math Stars identifies students who demonstrate extraordinary mathematical talent and provides long-term support designed to help them continue developing their abilities.

To earn the recognition, Eleazar completed a multi-stage evaluation process that included an online problem-solving assessment, a proctored exam and family interview. Students were evaluated on their mathematical aptitude and potential to benefit from advanced opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

“We are incredibly proud of Eleazar for this remarkable achievement,” said Melissa Pellegrino, Stowe Elementary principal. “Being named a National Math Star reflects Eleazar’s exceptional extraordinary talent, dedication and perseverance. We can’t wait to see all that he accomplishes in the future.” 

As a National Math Star, Eleazar will receive individualized support designed to challenge and develop his mathematical abilities through the end of high school. National Math Stars provides students with access to advanced math coursework, STEM opportunities, advising, mentorship and a community of other mathematically talented students.

Launched in 2023, National Math Stars works to identify and support students demonstrating exceptional mathematical ability at an early age. The organization seeks students with mathematical talent found in approximately one in every 1,000 students and provides up to 10 years of support to help them pursue their interests and reach their potential.

The program continued its nationwide expansion in 2026, with students eligible from 10 states: Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Ohio, Texas and Wisconsin. Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi joined the program this year as National Math Stars expanded its reach across the South.

The 10 states we're drawing these Stars from represent one-fourth of the second- and third-graders in America. Each year, we reach a larger share of students who possess truly exceptional math abilities. With this new cohort, we are supporting just shy of 1,000 Stars. These amazing students will shape the future of STEM research and innovation."
