Birdville ISD Regional Day School Program for the Deaf Earns Top Honors, Advances to Nationals

The Birdville ISD Regional Day School Program for the Deaf (RDSPD) High School Academic Bowl team is headed to compete on the biggest stage in the country for the first time ever.

Birdville ISD earned the opportunity to compete at the national level by earning a fourth place overall finish at the South Regional Academic Bowl competition in St. Augustine, Florida. Competing against 15 top teams from across the region, Birdville RDSPD students showcased their academic excellence across a wide range of subjects, including literature, mathematics, science and technology, social studies, and current events.

The fourth place overall finish is BISD’s highest regional finish ever. In addition, the team also earned the Sportsmanship Award for the third consecutive year, underscoring their integrity and professionalism.

The regional competition featured a rigorous three-round format testing both teamwork and individual knowledge. In Round 1, teams collaborated to answer questions for points and bonus opportunities. Round 2 highlighted individual skill, with each student answering questions independently. The final round increased the stakes with higher-value questions and no partial credit awarded.

The Academic Bowl is a prestigious event open to high school students who are deaf or hard of hearing from across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

“We are incredibly proud of our students for earning the opportunity to represent our program at the National Academic Bowl,” said Tammy Diller, Executive Director of Special Education. “Their hard work, determination, and commitment to excellence truly reflect the strength of our Regional Day School Program for the Deaf. They are outstanding ambassadors for our community, and we look forward to seeing all they accomplish on the national stage.”

Birdville RDSPD will next compete at the national level April 16-20 at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. Gallaudet University is the world’s only liberal arts university designed specifically for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Members of the team include Ava Burke, Andrew Nguyen and Luke Benham. The coaches for the tea are Amelia Duka and Jacquelyn Janaro.

“Our team is stepping onto the National Academic Bowl stage for the very first time, and we couldn’t be prouder,” said Dr. Nancy Benham, RDSPD Coordinator. “This moment reflects their hard work, resilience, and the courage to compete at the highest level. No matter the outcome, they’ve already made history for our program and shown what dedication and teamwork can achieve. We believe in them, we’re cheering for them, and we know they will represent us with excellence and heart.”
