Professional Learning Goals and Objectives

BISD Goal 1: All students will exceed state and national standards in all subject areas.

Staff development will improve the learning and success of all students.

Strategy 1: Use disaggregated student data to determine adult learning priorities, monitor progress, and help sustain continuous improvement.

  • Analyze district, campus, teacher and student data in Ed Soft
  • Monitor and track data on the District Dashboard
  • Compare district and campus data over time
  • Report data to all stakeholders

Strategy 2: Use multiple sources of information to guide improvement and demonstrate its impact.

  • Train campus and district teams in Baldrige Continuous Improvement
  • Read and respond to Action Learning Team blogs
  • Conduct book studies with leadership and campus teams
    (Working on the Work, Malcolm and Me, etc.)
  • Survey staff and stakeholders regarding professional learning

Strategy 3: Use learning strategies appropriate to the intended goal.

  • Showcase use of Continuous Improvement tools
  • Share campus dashboards
  • Produce and share district video
  • Encourage completion of eight professional learning modules

Strategy 4: Deepen educators' content knowledge.

  • Conduct book studies (leadership teams, grade level teams, Action Learning Teams, Facilitators, departments, etc.)
  • Train staff in Continuous Improvement techniques
  • Provide resources and experiences for Action Learning Teams
  • Participate in state and national conferences
  • Integrate technology into daily practice via Instructional Technology Specialists

Strategy 5: Provide educators with research-based instructional strategies to assist students in meeting rigorous academic standards.

  • Schedule content consultants on campuses when requested
  • Offer specialized workshops in math, science, ELA, and social studies
  • Train teachers in Schlechty Standard Bearer WOW and Baldrige Continuous Improvement strategies and tools
  • Encourage and support participation in state and national conferences
  • Provide customized Special Services professional learning opportunities

Strategy 6: Prepare educators to use various types of classroom assessments appropriately.

  • Model and demonstrate Continuous Improvement Tools (consens-o-grams, fish diagrams, PDSA, etc.)
  • Model using TEKS Checks as assessment for learning
  • Bring in outside consultants to work with teachers on target areas
    (Pat Jacoby, for example)
  • Provide training using district alternative and traditional assessments

BISD Goal 2: All classrooms and schools will be safe, secure, and nurturing places for students, staff and parents.

Strategy 1: Prepare educators to understand and appreciate all students, create safe, orderly and supportive learning environments, and hold high expectations for their academic achievement.

  • Provide district-wide training in the work of Ruby Payne
  • Conduct surveys of parents, students and staff to ascertain needs
  • Work with the Small Learning Communities grant for 9th grade academics
  • Provide parent education programs alongside Even Start
  • Work through the 21st Century grant program to provide training for fathers
  • Provide training for staff on multicultural issues

BISD Goal 3: BISD staff will implement systemic and systematic improvements in all departments and on all campuses.

Objective 1: All departments and schools will implement continuous improvement practices to improve organizational performance.

Strategy 1: Organize educators into learning communities whose goals are aligned with those of the district and the school.

  • Form Action Learning Teams across the district to meet over time

Strategy 2: Provide educators with the knowledge and skills to collaborate.

  • Form Action Learning Teams
  • Organize grade level campus and department teams
  • Schedule vertical content teams
  • Conduct leadership teams (ILT, AP ILT, Advisory Committees, etc.)
  • Model and encourage collaboration
  • Demonstrate and encourage use of Continuous Improvement tools

Strategy 3: Apply knowledge about human learning and change.

  • Use the tools from Baldrige Continuous Improvement
  • Focus on student engagement in meaningful work (WOW)

Strategy 4: Prepare educators to apply research to decision making.

  • Collect and monitor data using Continuous Improvement tools
  • Implement WOW tools to develop, implement, and measure engaging learning

Objective 2: Annual departmental and campus surveys will reflect a 20 percent increase in customer satisfaction.

Strategy 1: Use formal and informal surveys to determine customer satisfaction.

  • Conduct campus, department, and district surveys
  • Complete Baldrige Continuous Improvement System Checks
